History has a way of leaving its mark through various channels, all it takes is one to simply open their minds. It can be seen through the skeletons of the structures that once stood, the stories that are passed down through the generations and become cemented in our minds, or in the traces our ancestors choose to leave behind.

The kanga has long been rooted in Tanzanian history as a way to both honour past generations and as a way to celebrate their culture filling the streets with vibrant colours and intricate designs. In the 19th century women started to mend together three by two pieces and eventually it led to a fashion trend even men would follow! Today the kanga (or khanga), is still worn and holds different meanings for different occasions. Women wear kangas as a way to communicate, there are different sayings woven into a kanga from proverbs to slogans to axioms that all relate back to Swahili culture, morals, and history.

One of the main pillars of traveling with a purpose is immersing in local culture and learning the history and importance that culture still has on a destination. To ignore the culture is to be close minded, missing an opportunity to learn more about others and in the process, possibly about yourself. Zanzibar is a unique destination still tied to its history and culture in a way that we see less and less of today. It is an incredible snapshot of the legacy that can remain in tact by people and a place.

Stone Town is the cultural hub and last of the few remaining ancient cities that still function in East Africa. The spice island has had many visitors come to its white sandy shores throughout the course of its history, making it a multicultural melting pot that can be seen through the expression of its multitude of spirited fabrics and unique prints. Textiles that illustrate a rich African heritage while weaving in its strong Arabic influence, fusing it so seamlessly together that it’s hard to point out where one begins and the other ends.
